When CO gas spread on the surface of working electrode through the pores in the shell through the gas-permeable, under the catalysis of working electrode, the CO gas will happen the oxidation reaction. Its chemical formula is CO+H2O→CO2+2H++2e-.
The H+ ions and electrons generated from oxidation reaction on the working electrode, will be transferred to the counter electrode, which keeps the certain interval with working electrode through the electrolyte, and occurs the reduction reaction with the oxygen in the water. Its chemical formula is 1/202+2H++2e-→H20. Therefore, there occurs the oxidation-reduction reversible reaction in the sensor. Its chemical formula is 2CO+202→2C02.
The oxidation-reduction reversible reaction will occur between the working electrode and counter electrode all the time and produce the potential difference among the electrodes. The reactions on the two electrodes will polarize the electrode, which makes it difficult to maintain a constant inter-electrode potential. It also limit the detection range of CO concentration.
